Remove the OSX.RSPlug.A Trojan Horse from your Mac

So far the only malicious software known to infect Macintosh Computers is called the OSX.RSPlug.A, a rather insidious Trojan Horse. It's not exactly a virus since it doesn't replicate itself, but it can cause some damage. The only way to get this malware on your computer is to download and install it, and enter in your administrator password.

This malware has been distributed by a video of a certain less-than-sane celebrity. As people have downloaded this video, they've received a message saying they don't have the proper codec to view it, and they're offered the "proper" codec as a download. When the "codec" is installed, it asks for your administrator password which gives it the permissions to run wild on your system.

The Trojan changes DNS information that re-routes all your web traffic to pornography and phishing sites. If you happen to know how to fix this and do, the Trojan Horse will change the DNS information back so your web surfing will still be compromised.

Here's how to identify if you have the Trojan, and what to do to remove it both with Virus Barrier and manually (if you're brave).

Follow the instruction below:-

1) Update and run your anti-virus software. This is the preferred method to remove the Trojan Horse and repair the damage caused by the malware. If you choose not to use AV software, continue, but be very cautious.

2) Go to your root "Library" Folder. Click on your Hard Drive icon in the Finder and select the "Library Folder".

3) Navigate to the "Internet Plug-Ins" Folder.

4) See if there's a "plugins.settings" file in this folder. If that file is not in this folder, you're not infected.

5) Delete "plugin.settings". Either drag it to the Trash on your Dock or hit the Command Key and Delete at the same time.

6) Empty your trash. Right-click or Control-click the Trash icon on the Dock and select "Empty Trash".

7) Open "Terminal" (Applications > Utilities).

8) Type in "sudo crontab -l" (the letter L, and minus the quotes), hit Return, and enter your administrator password when asked. If it returns with anything other than "crontab: no crontab for root", you are most likely infected.

9) Type in "sudo crontab -r" (minus the quotes) and enter your administrator password. This will remove the scheduled "cron" job that modifies your Mac's DNS information.

10) Re-type "sudo crontab -1" (minus the quotes) to make sure that the delete process worked. If it did, you should see "crontab: no crontab for root".

11) Type "exit" (minus the quotes) in Terminal.

12) Restart your computer. Your Mac should now be clean!

How to Fix a "JVM terminated. Exit code=13" Error in Eclipse

If you are trying to start Eclipse, but are continually getting a "JVM terminated. Exit code=13" error" then you need to fix the error. Here's how.

Instructions

1) First, realize that this error is caused when you are attempting to start Eclipse using the wrong version of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). So you need to realize what JVM you are starting with.

2) If you are using Linux, you can type "which java" on the command line. Otherwise, you can type "java -version". This will give you the Java version.

3) Now, you need to research the correct JVM for the version of Eclipse that you are using. For example, if you are using Eclipse Europa, it may require the 1.5 JVM to start. When you initially get the error message, you may see something that says "requiredJavaVersion=1.5", which will tell you what version of the JVM is required.

4) Make sure that you have the correct version of Java installed.

5) Now, you can either change the Java version environment variable or you can tell Eclipse to use a different version of the virtual machine upon startup. To do this you use the "vm" flag.

For example: ./eclipse -vm /home/seed/app/jre1.5.0_10/bin

6) Now that you have changed the version of the Java Virtual Machine that you are using to start Eclipse, the error should be resolved. Good luck!

Fix Code 39 Driver Error

A code 39 is usually a driver error that prevents your CD or DVD-ROM drive from being displayed. It alerts you that a communication error has occurred and the ROM drivers are either corrupt or missing. A code 39 error can be caused by a number of reasons including the presence of malicious files, or registry problems. Regardless, a few simple troubleshooting steps and guidelines can solve this error and allow you to use your ROM drive.

Using the Registry

1) Click the Windows "Start" button and click "Run."

2) Type "regedit" (Without quotes) and press "Enter" to open the registry console.

3) Click the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" folder on the left panel and click "SYSTEM." Click "CurrentControlSet" and click "Control." Click "Class and click the "{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" key. Delete the following entries if they exist under this key: LowerFilters, LowerFilters.bak, UpperFilters, UpperFilters.bak.

4) Click "File" and click "Exit" to close the registry console. Restart your computer.

Stop a Virus That Sends Emails From Your Computer

Some viruses, as well as worms, have the capacity to hijack the user's e-mail client and obsessively send out copies of themselves to everyone on the contact list. Other malware, like bots, adware or spyware, may also have this capability and mail unauthorized messages, although these programs are unable to replicate themselves like true viruses. The most promising course of action to take in this or any other case of infection is to use quality antivirus and anti-malware programs to scan the computer and eradicate the contagion(s). Excellent security software can be had for free.

Obtaining the Required Software
1) Go to www.download.com

2) Move cursor to the list of choices under the title "Categories" on the very left of the page; mouse over the tab (without clicking) called "Security Software." A second list of choices appears immediately to the right; now click on the top choice, marked "Most popular Security software." A new page appears.

3) Decide which product you want based on popularity, editor's picks or personal preference; download it.

Scanning for malware

1) Install the software and immediately perform an update in order to obtain the latest version and most recent definitions.

2) Follow the instructions provided by your new security software and perform a full system scan.

3) Once the scan is complete, which may take several hours, remove any detected threats.

4) Restart the computer.

Tips & Warnings

Many IT experts recommend having two or three different security programs: one antivirus and two anti-spyware. This is to ensure that no malware slips past unnoticed, as detection rules and tactics used by each program vary. One program can catch what the other has missed.

Do not run all these programs at once, as they will almost certainly interfere with each other. Only after you've finished and closed one program, launch the next. If you choose to have one security program running in the background on constant basis, close it while the other does its work. Only one program at a time should ever be operating.

Keep all your security software up to date and perform a full system scan at least weekly.

How to Remove the List.Exe Virus

1) "Spybot Search and Destroy" is a freeware option you can download via the link in Resources. Download it and begin the installation process. When prompted if you would like to turn on "Tea Timer", select "No," as "Tea Timer" can use up valuable system resources. Update the program and perform a "Search and Destroy" by following the on-screen instructions and allowing the program to find infected files. "Spybot S&D" has an excellent reputation in the world of anti-malware and should locate most infections.

2) Download and install Malwarebytes (see link in Resources). Perform a "Full Scan" to ensure that Malwarebytes checks all the files in your computer. Do this by choosing "Perform Full Scan" when prompted, and letting the program scan all files. The program will allow you to delete the offending programs, including List.exe files, once they are found.

3) AVG Free is a third freeware option that can assist with the removal of "List.exe" type infections. AVG features active protection, which means that if you already have an anti-virus installed that failed to locate the infection, uninstall it by accessing "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Anti-virus programs are notorious for fighting each other if installed and running simultaneously.

4) Download "AVG Free" via the link in Resources. Download it and begin the installation process. When prompted if you would like to install the "AVG Security Toolbar", select "No," as this option can also use up system resources. Update the program and perform a full scan. When the scan has completed, select "Remove all unhealed infections". List.exe should be part of the list.

Fix a Facebook Virus

Did someone hack your Facebook account? This activity can easily be detected if you see status updates that you did not post to your public Facebook wall. Status updates can be links to spam sites or virus downloading websites that infect anyone who clicks on them. Cleaning out your Facebook profile and computer is essential in getting rid of the virus, and protecting your computer from future invasions.

Follow the steps to stop Facebook virus spreading from your profile

1) Update your anti-virus and anti-spyware softwares for the latest definitions and virus detection.

2) Run anti-virus software to check the entire "C" drive (main computer hard drive). Run anti-spyware software once the anti-virus program has completed its scan. Delete any viruses or malicious files detected by either program.

3) Login to your Facebook account and change your password to something difficult. Use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols to form a hard-to-guess password.

4) Go through your Facebook friend list and remove any individuals that you do not know; they can be online strangers that added you as friend to gain access to your profile. Remove any friends that appear to spam or have fake Facebook accounts (sexy or inappropriate pictures, constant spam link in status updates, and questionable content are some signs to look for).

5) Remove any status updates on your Facebook profile that appear to be virus links. Click on "Profile" - "Wall" and hover over the questionable status update. Click on "Remove" button that shows up when hovering over the update. Confirm that the status should be deleted.

How to Fix a Virus From Hotmail

Using web mail such as Hotmail is convenient and easy, but often Internet emails can come with viruses that can infect and wreak havoc on your computer systems. Once your computer is infected, the virus will send copies of itself to all your online contacts, exposing them to potential infection as well. The virus usually comes in the form of an email that looks as though it is from a friend and asks you to download a photo. Once the file is downloaded and run, the virus infects your computer system. You should fix these viruses immediately to prevent harm to your computer.

Follow the steps to fix the issue:-

1) Click the "Start" button in the lower left hand corner of your screen, then choose "Control Panel" from the right side of the pop-up menu. Click on "Add/Remove Programs."

2) Find "Toolbar888" in the list of programs and click the "Change/Uninstall" button to uninstall it.

3) Press "CTRL" + "ALT" + "DELETE" during the program uninstallation and click on the "Processes" tab when the task bar comes up. Highlight and click "End Process" if you find any of the following file names in the Processes list:

update.exe

goll.exe

two.exe

loadadv455.exe

drsmartload.exe

eyewblbby.exe

4) Download a free antivirus program such as AVG or Avast! (see Resources) and run a full scan of your computer to detect any other threats

Fix Csrss.exe Problem

Your diligence at virus scanning is admirable. Usually you have no problem cleaning up your computer and solving whatever issues arise. This time, however, your computer is claiming that a file labeled Csrss.exe is the problem. This is a common problem. Sometimes, your computer actually unnecessarily labels the Csrss.exe malware when it is really a necessary program file.

Follow the instructions to fix the issue

1) Determine if the Csrss.exe file is a problem by using a virus scan such as one created by Norton or McAfee. Your computer may be mislabeling the file and a third party virus scan may illuminate the problem. The file is not legitimate if you have a Windows version early than 98.

2) Use the Symantec removal tool developed for the Csrss.exe worm if your virus scan determines the file is dangerous. If this does not work, proceed to Step 3.

3) Locate the file and figure out if Csrss.exe is a Windows operating file. Look in the \Windows\System32 or \Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 the date stamps should be identical, if not one may be infected.

4) Check your Startup folder. Csrss.exe should not appear there as it is supposed to be launched automatically. If it appears in the Startup folder, it should be removed.

5) Delete the file once you have found it and decided that it is indeed a problem file. Csrss.exe can be a legitimate file. Use a little detective work to uncover the problem and clean up your computer files.

Enable or Disable Thumbnail Preview for PDF Files

Adobe Acrobat Reader includes a thumbnail extractor shell extension which generates thumbnail preview for PDF files in Explorer. If you want to disable PDF thumbnail generation for performance or for other reasons, use the steps listed below:

(This assumes that you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in your system.)

Disable Thumbnail Preview for .PDF files.

Note: For an automated solution using REG files, see section Registry Fix in this article.

1. Launch Regedit.exe and navigate to the following branch:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ AcroExch.Document.7 \ Shellex \ {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
2. Backup the branch using the Export option under File menu.

3. Right-click {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1} and choose Delete. Click Yes when prompted for confirmation.

4. Exit the Registry Editor.

5. Logoff and login back for the change to take effect.

Tip: Existing PDF files may still show thumbnail preview from the thumbnail cache. In Windows XP you can simply delete the hidden file named thumbs.db (thumbnail database file) to refresh the views. In Windows Vista, use the Disk Cleanup tool to clear the thumbnail cache.

If you’re using Windows Vista, the Preview pane can still generate preview for PDF files, despite the above setting.

Registry Fix

1. Download pdf-thumb.zip and save to Desktop.

2. Extract the files to a folder.

3. Double-click pdf-thumb-disable.reg to run it.

4. Logoff and login back for the change to take effect.

Undo information: To reverse the changes, run the file pdf-thumb-enable.reg.

at Microsoft.Office.Server.Administration.ApplicationServerJob.ProvisionLocalSharedServiceInstances(Boolean isAdministrationServiceJob)

Solution: This is caused by the Office Server Search Service having bad authentication information. First, go to Central Administration and click on the affected server. This should take you to the services on server view. Click on the Office SharePoint Server Search Service link and it will take you to the settings page. Enter the correct login information. On the machine itself, restart the Office SharePoint Server Search service in the Services management console. This should generate two new log entries Event IDs 10044 and 10045 indicating that changes to the configuration were successfully saved and imported. To re-enable search indexing on your site, restart IIS.

Fix Event ID 7888 in Office SharePoint Server

When starting a full or incremental import of Active Directory, either manually or scheduled, the import is successful, but there is an error thrown as soon as the import is initiated. My assumption is the AD import kicks off several simulateous jobs such as updating users "My SharePoint Sites" in the MOSS and Office 2007 environments.

For reference, to kick off a manual import of AD: Central Administration > Shared Services > User Profile and Properties

Resolution

1) Navigate to: Central Administration > Operations > Services on Server > Office SharePoint Server Search.
2) In the "Configure Office SharePoint Server Search Service Settings" page, locate the account defined for "Farm Search Service Account" and write down the account name.

i ) For reference, the account defined serves as the account for the AD "Configure Profile Account" access account.

ii) For reference, you can get to AD Profile Account page: Central Administration > Shared Services > User Profile and Properties > Configure Profile Import.

3) Navigate to: Central Administration > Shared Services > Personalization services permissions.
4) On the "Manage Permissions: Shared Service Rights" page, add the account from before (or edit if already exists). The account needs one of the following permissions; I couldn't figure out which one:

Manage user profiles
Manage permissions
I've tested this resolution several times with success.

For reference, I've updated my Farm Search Service Account with the following permissions since the account in question will most likely be accessing the types of content referenced in the permissions at one point or another:

  • Manage user profiles
  • Manage audiences
  • Manage permissions
  • Manage usage analytics

Other Thoughts
As with Event ID 2424 I wrote about, I noticed that Event ID 7888 began around the time I installed the following WSS/MOSS security patches which came out prior to the SharePoint SP1 patch:

WSS Update: kb934525
MOSS Update: kb937832

I'm going to make the assumption that this error will occur as soon as you install the SharePoint SP1 patch as well.

Conclusion
Somewhere along the line, the WSS/MOSS and/or SharePoint SP1 update(s) are modifying existing permissions… Shame on the updates.

How to set pop3 setting of yahoomail in outlook

You can use Microsoft Outlook with many email accounts. Most Email providers such as Google’s Gmail, Microsoft’s Hotmail and many other providers provide free POP and SMTP access which allows you to use and integrate all your Email Accounts using Microsoft’s Outlook Express. The only exception is Yahoo’s Yahoo! Mail. In this day and age it is really unfortunate that Yahoo does not provide free POP and STMP access to the users of its free Yahoo! mail.

Note: Yahoo does provide free POP and SMTP access to its premium Yahoo! Mail Plus which requires a paid subscription. If you are one of those who has a Yahoo! mail Plus account, scroll down to the bottom of this article on how you can access Yahoo! Mail using Microsoft Outlook.

How to access Yahoo! Mail using Microsoft Outlook

Step 1: Download YPOPs

You need to download a small application called YPOPs. YPOPs is an application that provides POP3 and SMTP access to Yahoo! Mail. YPOPs acts as a gateway between Yahoo! Mail and Microsoft Outlook. For those who opted for the new Yahoo Mail beta are good too to use this to access Yahoo! mail using Outlook. Download YPOPs from SourceForge.

Step 2: Install YPOPs.

When configuring YPOPs, while the default settings are pretty good, I like to customize them a bit.

* In Receiving Email, under download Email Category, I choose to select just Unread email to download so that I won’t download all the hundreds of emails I have.
* In Sending Email, I check Save email in Yahoo’s Sent Items Folder
* In Miscellaneous, it is good to check Automatically start YPOPs! when Windows starts so that you don’t have to worry about launching it everytime you launch Microsoft Outlook.

Step 3: Configure Microsoft Outlook to access Yahoo! Mail

* For Microsoft Outlook 2003, Go to Tools –> Email Accounts. Select Add a new email account. Click Next. Check POP3 and click on Next

* For Microsoft Outlook 2007, go to Tools –> Account Settings and under Email click New… Under Add a new Email Account select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP. Then under Add new Email account, check Manually configure server settings or additional server types

* Type your name under Your Name

* Type in your Yahoo! Mail address under Email Address which is the full youremail@yahoo.com

* Under Incoming mail server (POP3) type in localhost. (If localhost does not work type in 127.0.0.1 instead)

* Under Outgoing mail server (SMTP) type in localhost. (If localhost does not work type in 127.0.0.1 instead)

* Under Username type in your Yahoo! Mail address. For example if your email address is asmith2233@yahoo.com, then type in asmith2233. Enter your Yahoo! Mail password and check remember the password

* Click More settings. Under Outgoing Server tab check My outgoing server(SMTP) requires authentication

* Click OK and then Next and then click Finish
